Living in the frozen tundra of northern Michigan (only a slight exaggeration), sunlight can be fairly hard to come by for a good half of the year (or more). And even when it is sunny outside, opening the curtains lets in not only light but also more cold air, thanks to my drafty old house. That’s where Natural Spectrum Light can be a real lifesaver!
Natural Spectrum Light (or Full Spectrum Light) is a fairly well-known treatment for Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). While I’m not diagnosed with SAD, I still very much enjoy having a brightly-lit work area for certain activities. Relaxing? Give me dim candlelight. But for things like, I dunno, blogging – full spectrum light is great at helping me stay more focused and feel more awake.
Verilux sent me a great Natural Spectrum lamp to review – this one is extra special because it’s a clip lamp! It offers Natural Spectrum Illumination for improved visual clarity and increased productivity and focus, and the clip means you can clip it to your desk, bookcase, workbench – anywhere you want bright natural light! It comes with a long-life (10,000 hour) energy-efficient bulb already in it, and has an Optix lens to reduce glare. The on/off switch is a simple twist-style located at the back of the lamp.
The packaging on the box explains more about Natural Spectrum Light:
Verilux Natural Spectrum light illuminates in the broader scotopic range to better stimulate the cones and rods (photoreceptors) of the eye. This enhanced stimulation improves visual performance by reducing the size of the pupil to better focus light, relaxing the eye while increasing visual acuity and processing.
Per the product information page, this light can help you read faster with greater comprehension; study longer without glare, eyestrain, and fatigue; and work smarter with improved productivity and focus. I clipped this lamp to the bookcase by my computer desk so the light is shining off to my right. It really does seem like there’s sunlight shining on me, which in itself makes me feel more awake and alert. And I love the convenience of being able to move the lamp around to wherever is most convenient! I can leave it clipped to my bookcase, or I can flip it around to shine on my armchair if I want to sit down and read for a while. If I have fine detail work to do, I can set it up to shine directly on my work area.
The Verilux SmartLight Clip Lamp is available for $29.95 on the Verilux website.
