You know the commercials where there are people wearing black shirts and then get all embarrassed when someone points out the dandruff flakes decorating their shoulders like tiny little snowflakes? I always thought those commercials were pretty silly when I was a kid – why would anyone be embarrassed about dandruff? It’s just something that happens. Who cares if you have little white dots on your shirt?

Well, as it turns out – *I* do (just like pretty much everyone else)! I just didn’t know it until it happened. I get really dry skin, especially in the winter, and that includes the top of my head. Thankfully it’s not frequent, but it’s still annoying. And I have such dark hair that it doesn’t matter what I’m wearing – everyone will see the white flakes before they have a chance to migrate down to my shoulders.

Dr. Marder Skincare has a great line of products available to help you keep the flakes away – even if your flakes are caused by something more serious than just dry skin!

I had the chance to try out Dr. Marder Scalp Therapy Total Relief Shampoo and Conditioner. That’s two separate products, because it’s a 2-step system – the shampoo contains hydrocortisone to relieve itching, and the conditioner has pyrithione zinc for its anti-dandruff and anti-sebborrheic dermatitis properties. And in fact, Dr. Marder Skincare is proud to say that Total Relief Shampoo is the first ever over-the-counter dandruff system to combine hydrocortisone in it!

TotalRelief

Both the shampoo and conditioner are designed to hydrate and revitalize your scalp – even if you suffer from conditions like seborrheic dermatitis, eczema, or psoriasis. The soothing botanical complex is gentle enough for everyday use and is safe for colored and treated hair, but also relieves itching and scaling AND helps heal your scalp, preventing future dandruff outbreaks. And an extra bonus: these products even promote new hair growth! (Personally, I’m more worried about my thinning hair than I am about flakes these days!) They’re also sulfate and paraben free.

The nice thing about the Total Relief shampoo and conditioner is that they’re great hair care products in addition to their healing properties. They’re both very a thick consistency (not watered down at all) – so you’re not paying for a tube of water when you buy the Total Relief products. The shampoo got my hair SUPER clean – the expression “squeaky clean” really applies with this shampoo! And after using both the shampoo and conditioner, I was really impressed with how nice they made my hair look.

And you know how dandruff shampoo usually SMELLS like dandruff shampoo? (So you might temporarily get rid of the flakes, but everyone knows you’re using dandruff shampoo because it has such a distinct scent to it). One of my favorite things about this shampoo and conditioner is that they DON’T smell like dandruff shampoo. Neither of them smells “mediciney” at all. The shampoo just has a nice clean “shampoo” scent, very slightly flowery but not too girly for a guy to use. And when I opened the conditioner, I got a nice scent of coconut (which happens to be my favorite shampoo/conditioner scent – I stick to my regular brand pretty closely primarily because it’s coconut scented).

I do have to say, in the interest of keeping things real, that the price is somewhat steep. At $30 a bottle, the Total Relief products are a little out of my price range to use as my regular shampoo and conditioner. BUT they got my hair so clean that I think they’ll do great as a “clarifying” type of product once every week or two (and obviously also whenever things start to get flaky and itchy up there). If the price were lower, I’d seriously consider making the Total Relief brand my regular brand. (But in the interest of fairness this time, my regular brand is just plain old shampoo and conditioner, and doesn’t do anything to treat or prevent dandruff).

You can purchase Total Relief Shampoo and Conditioner on the Dr. Marder Skincare website for $29.99 each. These products are also available on Amazon.

One lucky reader is going to WIN Total Relief Shampoo and Conditioner – a $59.98 ARV This giveaway is open worldwide and giveaway ends November 6 at 11:59pm EST – good luck!
