Founded in 2012 by a baker and a registered nurse, Good Natured Gourmet offers a selection of dessert mixes that are made with natural ingredients and vitamins so that the resulting baked goodness is both delicious AND nutritious!
I was fortunate enough to be able to try out two of their Chubby Babies Lactation Cookie mixes, the Oatmeal Chocolate Chip and the Double Chocolate Oatmeal. These cookies contain ingredients to help nursing moms increase breast milk production- barley flour, brewer’s yeast, flax seed, whole grain rolled oats and calcium. Since my little guy is almost a year old and eats a lot of solids now, I was worried that I might lose my milk supply. He still likes to nurse after meals and at bedtime (or whenever he says so – he has ways of letting me know!), and neither of us is ready to give those times up yet. He’s also still learning how to use a sippy cup (we decided to skip right over bottles since I was able to nurse him exclusively, and my third son had a VERY difficult time giving up his bottle and I wanted to avoid going through that again if at all possible).
The cookies are incredibly easy to make – all you have to do is dump the bag of mix into a bowl, add a stick of softened butter and one egg, and mix it all up. Then you toss ‘em in the oven for 9 or 10 minutes, and what you get is soft gooey chocolatey goodness.
Of the two flavors I tried, I definitely preferred the Double Chocolate Oatmeal – the Oatmeal Chocolate Chip cookies were good, but I’m a professed chocoholic, so double chocolate is better than single chocolate, in my opinion. These cookies taste so good that I’d gladly choose them over other brands even if they didn’t have the added ingredients to help boost milk supply. I had to force myself not to eat the whole batch (each bag makes approximately 24 cookies) in one sitting, and space them out as recommended.
As for the milk production increase? The effects were better than expected. I haven’t needed to use nursing pads in quite some time, but after two days of eating these cookies, I was leaking through on the side that Captain Fussypants wasn’t using. There was a definite, measurable increase in milk production. After just two days!
Another benefit? They’re called lactation cookies, so the menfolk in my house (and there’s a lot of them, all of whom love cookies) won’t touch them. There’s no reason they couldn’t eat them, none of the ingredients would have any negative effects on them (like make them start producing milk), but just because they’re labeled lactation cookies, they immediately back off. No reason to force them to try the cookies, as far as I’m concerned – the more there are for me, the better!
