My oldest son has been asking for a Bluetooth speaker for Christmas. He listens to a lot of music (as do all of us – even the baby has his own little Bluetooth speaker he likes to carry around), but his previous speaker broke and he’s been slowly going insane from the torture of having to listen to his music through his phone’s speaker. So the timing was perfect when LuguLake contacted me about reviewing their Bluetooth speaker! After trying it out, I like it so well that I just may be keeping this one for myself and buying another one to give to my son.
The LuguLake Speaker arrives packaged in a very sturdy box – this isn’t thin cardboard; this is the kind of box you can wrap up and put under the tree and not worry about it getting squashed by other gifts being piled on top of it. Everything you need is packaged with it – the speaker comes with a USB cable, a 3.5 mm audio cable, and an instructional booklet.
The usage and controls are pretty intuitive – you charge it up with the included USB cable (you’ll need to plug the other end of the cable into your computer or USB wall charger – the red “charging” light goes off when it’s fully charged. Then you just turn it on, and pair it up. My smartphone (a Galaxy S4) found it within seconds and paired up with no problem. There’s a separate “working” indicator light – it flashes red and blue while it’s searching, and then slowly flashes blue to indicate that it’s paired up and ready to go. (If you want to use the speaker with a non-Bluetooth device – like my laptop computer – you can connect it with the audio cable instead).
The speaker itself is made of aluminum – it’s not heavy, but it’s not going to get blown off the picnic table with a gust of wind, either. And the design is really nice – this is a really snazzy looking speaker! The one I received is “coffee” colored, but it looks like a bronze color to me. Whatever you call it, it’s a very pretty golden-brown color with a faint shimmer to it. It’s a nice enough design that you don’t have to tuck it away, you can leave it on display even when you’re not using it.
The unique feature of this speaker is that it has a cradle along the bottom edge, so you can prop up your smartphone or tablet (in either horizontal or landscape positioning)! This is really handy for music video watchers in particular (like my boys) – just load up a playlist, prop up the tablet, and you get the great sound from the speaker and can watch the video without having to find a safe place to prop the tablet. (We’ve had a couple of shattered screen incidents over the past few years, so I really like this feature!) And when you’re using it with a non-Bluetooth device (going back to my computer here), it lets you have a “multi-screen” experience. I can keep working on my laptop (with my audio notifications turned on) while also watching and listening to TV shows, movies, or videos on the tablet via the LuguLake Speaker.
The sound quality is really good, too (and really, isn’t that the most important part of a speaker?) It has professional stereo sound with two 3-watt stereo speakers. The advanced equalization technique allows the stereo audio system to deliver high fidelity sound without any distortion at all. I did have to check out its ability to play a song with a heavy bass line, and there was no distortion even with the volume turned all the way up.
Speaking of volume… the only downside to this speaker is that there’s no volume control or mute on the speaker itself – you have to control the volume with your phone or tablet. But since this is a stand-style speaker rather than one designed to be carried around in your pocket (although it is small enough and light enough that you can transport it very easily), that hasn’t been a problem for me.
So if you have someone on your shopping list who’s in need of an attractively-designed Bluetooth speaker with great sound quality, grab one quick so you can save an extra $5 (that’ll buy a pretty good sized chocolate Santa!)
