My organizational system when I’m packing for a trip needed some work. I’m good at fitting a lot of stuff into a small suitcase, but not so great at organizing all that stuff within the suitcase. I took a trip to New York City a few years back… do you know how I organized the stuff I packed in my suitcase? Plastic grocery bags. Talk about a high class world traveler, huh?
I’ll be better prepared next time, though. Do you know want to know what my new, much improved organizational strategy is? Dot&Dot Packing Cubes! I wish I’d known about these before my vacation to New York City!
I just learned about these nifty little luggage organizers when I had the opportunity to review one of Dot&Dot’s medium packing cubes. You can buy these packing cubes individually or in sets of 4, in your choice of ten different colors. (I, of course, chose purple). So the next time we go on vacation as a family (which would actually be our *first* vacation as a family!), each of the six of us could have our own color-coded packing cubes to keep everything separated and organized! (My teens already argue over whose socks are whose, I don’t want to hear it on a family trip!)
The medium size cube measures 13.5″ x 9.75″ x 3″, which I found is large enough to hold five of my shirts or a pair of jeans plus two thermal style shirts. These are such a great way to get and stay organized – not only when traveling, but around the house too! I’m going to put my packing cube to work in my sock drawer while it’s not on travel duty to keep my nylons and “dress socks” separate from my “everyday socks,” but there are just tons of uses for these handy little cubes. And if you’re really the organizational type, you could even color-code things like linen closets using these cubes – different colors/sizes of packing cubes for washcloths, hand towels, kitchen towels, etc.
The packing cubes themselves are actually quite pretty as well as functional and sturdily made. They have a solid back, while the front is largely a mesh material to allow for airflow. The zipper runs from the top corners and around the bottom, and there’s a handle on top. And the material on the outside of the cube is a shimmery honeycomb pattern that I really like. The packing cube also arrives inside a transparent thick-ish ziploc-style bag that’s also quite useful.
While I’m good at stuffing a lot in a suitcase (or backpack or duffel bag), usually my technique results in fairly wrinkled clothes by the time I get to my destination. These are a really great way to keep your clothes from shifting around and getting all wrinkled up when you travel, and you maximize your packing space to boot. It also saves my clothes from getting zipped up in the edge of the suitcase, as tends to happen pretty often. Not only that, but these cubes speed up unpacking once you get to where you’re going, since everything’s already neatly compartmentalized and ready to be transferred to a dresser.
In addition to the medium cubes, Dot&Dot also offers small and large sizes, plus a hanging toiletry kit, a travel accessories organizer, a shoe bag/packing cube, two sizes of packing sleeves/folders, and two sizes of travel bottles! I kind of want to try the small packing cube in my purse to keep all my “stuff” organized. I really think Dot&Dot should branch out into purse organizers next!
Dot&Dot Medium Packing Cubes are available on Amazon for $11.00 each or $29.97 for a 4-pack. Want to save $5 on your order of a packing cube set? Just head on over to Amazon and enter promo code 5DOTSOFF at checkout!
