I love taking pictures, and I take a lot of photographs both of my family and of “scenic” images. (It’s my dream to someday be able to buy a really nice DSLR camera; for now, I do okay with my phone and my point-and-shoot… ah, but someday!) I used to work as a merchandiser, which meant a LOT of driving around in scenic northern Michigan, and I found some gorgeous locations to take pictures of.
I’ve had some of my photographs printed on regular photo paper and onto canvas, but I recently had the opportunity to display my photos in a new way – by having them printed on aluminum! Aluminyze offers the most unique, vivid, and durable medium available to display your most meaningful photographs and artwork. Your photograph or artwork is infused into a sheet of aluminum!
Aluminyze has myriad shapes and sizes for you to choose from: squares, rectangles, ovals, circles, panoramas… they even have hearts, designer shapes (with scalloped edges), and letters! I think it would be a really neat idea to get my kids’ name spelled out with a different meaningful image for each letter. Then there are the “LOVE,” “MOM,” and “Dad” prints, and they also have ornaments (in several shapes), custom license plates, and smartphone cases!
It was a hard choice, but I finally chose to Aluminyze a photograph I took last month of the gorgeous fall colors by our house. This is the picture I chose to be Aluminyzed:
The process is really simple. Once you know what photo or piece of artwork you want to transform, you log into the site and pick a product – choose a shape for your print, or one of the other types of available prints (like the smartphone cases). In my case, I knew I was going with a rectangle, and then I chose the 11 x 14 size. Next you upload your photo (you’ll want a high resolution image for best quality). After cropping your photo, you select the type of mount you’d like – an easel back, a wall float, or an aluminum edge mount. (The easel back is free; the other options start at $6.95).
Next you decide if you’d like a white surface or a silver surface – there are recommendations listed for which surface goes best with which types of photos (for example, the silver surface – which is what I went with – is recommended for bright colorful photos, black & white photos, and/or non-people photos – the silver surface can “wash out” areas with large areas of highlights). Then you choose your finish – glossy or matte. The glossy finish “turns up the shine and radiance” of your image, while the matte finish is subtler and softer. (My print has the glossy finish). Then you add it to your cart, and you’re done! Unless you want to create more prints, that is, in which case go for it!
I absolutely love the way this photograph turned out! It’s bright and eye-catching, which is exactly what I was going for. The colors seem to pop right off the print. It looks even better in real life than it does in the pictures I took, because you can see how the colors subtly change and shimmer as you change your perspective.
I do wish that the was a backing option for people like me who are indecisive – maybe I want to hang it on the wall, maybe I want to display it on the fireplace mantel – but this is an either/or proposition. I’d love to see a mounting option that features a wood float with a removable easel that slides or snaps into place – it seems like it would be relatively simple to have a small opening on the bottom of the wood float mounting option (basically a rectangle on the back of the print that sticks out a bit so you can hang it on the wall) that an easel backing could slide in or out of. Then again, I’m no expert, and maybe there’s a very good reason that this isn’t an option!
The pricing is comparable to canvas prints, and these prints are much more durable – and unique! – than plain photo paper prints. They’re tear-proof waterproof (unlike most other printing options) as well as scratch and UV resistant. You can even hang them outside! Prices start at $19.95 for a 5 x 5 print, all the way up to $319.95 for a huge 30 x 40 print. The print I received, an 11 x 14 with an easel backing, silver surface, and glossy finish, retails for $59.95 plus shipping.
